Red Hat – Command Line Heroes
Command Line Heroes is Red Hat’s award-winning podcast about the rebels, the developers, programmers, and hackers who create the most revolutionary products that routinely touch all of our lives.
Season 6, “Meet The Inventors,” features the stories of Black inventors who haven’t been given the credit they deserve. These heroes created new industries and reshaped the world. For example, did you know Dr. Gladys West’s contributions to satellite geodesy models contributed to developing the Global Positioning System (GPS)? Or that Jerry Lawson invented video game cartridges and changed the entire industry? Or that Mark Hannah was one of the founders of SGI (Silicon Graphics) and helped revolutionize the 3D animation industry through their hardware?
When Red Hat approached us about creating a promo for the latest season, we knew we had to come correct.
If you were a kid in the ’80s and ’90s, you vividly remember waking up at the crack of dawn in your PJs to watch your shows. Unlike the always available, on-demand content we have today, if you missed one episode, you were out of luck and forever had nagging questions about what happened. We wanted to capture that superhero nostalgia and create n Saturday Morning Cartoon-esque intro that primed viewers for the excitement to come.
Using a mix of techniques—2D, 3D, and a little cel animation—we created :30 and :15 second promos plus a handful of additional social media assets to sprinkle on top.
We did extensive historical research on the featured inventors and their games, cartridges, computer systems, GPS and satellites, etc., to ensure all our visual representations were accurate.
It was such an honor to participate in this project and apply our inclusive design principles to help bring these important people and their contributions to life.
